This is the day when the Buddha delivered what may well be referred to as his
first sermon in Sarnath .
Sarnath about 12 KM far from
Varanasi . It was given to a gathering of five friends, and is
widely believed to have established the foundation of Buddhist teaching. At the end of the so called sermon, one of the five friends
requested to be taken as a disciple, to which the Buddha agreed, thus establishing the first order of Buddhist monks ever.
Asalha day is celebrated in July, and marks the advent of the three month retreat Buddhist monks undertake to focus on meditative
processes and progress towards enlightenment.
