Kungri (Buddhist Monastery in Himachal Pradesh )

Kungri Monastery Kungri Monastery: built in the first half of the 14th century, Kungri monastery, like Tak Thok in Kashmir, is the only monastery in the entire Himachal valley to belong to the “Old Order”, the Nying ma pa. Coincidentally, it also happens to be the second oldest monastery in the Valley, and the home of Buddhist silk paintings, intricately carved statues, and over 300 volumes of sacred Tibetan texts. Recently, it was granted rather substantial foreign aid to help further its renovation efforts, and though it’s been restored, the monastery still retains the tranquil environment and vibe of its mystic prime. Another unique feature of this monastery is the annual Devil dance hosted here every year, around June. This is a sword dance performed by wandering friars also known as buzhens.
