History of Namgyal Monastery
The Namgyal monastery of Himachal Pradesh was founded in the 16th century by Sonam Gyatso, the third Dalai Lama. However, it wasn’t until the 20th century when the monastery came to assume the importance and stature it holds today. The Chinese invasion of 1959 compelled the 14th Dalai Lama, along with thousands of Tibetan Buddhists to flee over to India, where they were granted asylum in Dharamshala, Mcleodganj, and Himachal Pradesh. And so, this became the new site for the Namgyal Monastery, and so it still is.
The monastery is remarkable for several things, for example, it serves as one of the most influential learning centres for Buddhist monks, with the highest standards in terms of admission and teaching decorum. Also, here the rituals and practices of all the major schools of Tibetan Buddhism find a place.
