Built in the first half of the 14th century, Kungri monastery, like Tak Thok in Kashmir, is the only monastery in the entire Himachal valley to belong to the “Old Order”, the Nying Ma Pa.

Unique facts about Kungri Buddhist Monastery
It is home of Buddhist silk paintings, intricately carved statues, and over 300 volumes of sacred Tibetan texts . Recently, it was granted rather substantial foreign aid to help further its renovation efforts, and though it’s been restored, the monastery still retains the tranquil environment and vibe of its mystic prime.

Best time to visit Kungri is Buddhist Festivals. From April to June is best time to travel Himachal Pradesh.
Another unique feature of this monastery is the Annual Devil Dance hosted here every year, around June. This is a sword dance performed by wandering friars also known as buzhens.
