The Hemis festival is celebrated every year in June in the Hemis Monastery in Ladakh situated 45 km from Leh, the monastery was re-established in 1672 by the Ladakhi king Sengge Namgyal.

The Hemis Festival is a 2-day long cultural extravaganza. This festival is dedicated to the birth of the sage Guru Padmasambhava venerated as the Dance Performance at Hemis Monastery representative reincarnate of Buddha. He went on to be largely responsible for the spread of Buddhism in Tibet . Also known as Guru Rimpoche, he is believed to be a reincarnation of the Buddha, born on the date predicted by Gautama Buddha for the birth of such an entity. He is believed to have been born on the 10th day of the fifth month of the Monkey year as predicted by the Buddha Shakyamuni.

The festivities start early on the first of two days that the celebrations are held, and feature grand expressions of devotion such as the music of drums, cymbals and wind pipes are accompanied by the masked dances performing what is known as the Chaam Dance, essentially a Tantric Tradition to serve as spiritual offering, and a portrait of “Damdakarpo” unveiled exclusively during these celebrations.
